How much does it cost to build a website?

The honest answer: between €0 and €25,000, and that won't help you. This page explains where that difference comes from, what you get in each price range and how you determine what you need: even if you don't end up with us.

THE MARKET

Five price ranges, five different products

"A website" is not a product but a category, just like "a car". The price mainly says something about who makes it and how much of it is custom.

WHAT DETERMINES THE PRICE

Seven factors that make the difference

If you ask three parties for a quote, you will receive three amounts that are not comparable. This is almost always due to these seven points: so ask explicitly.

  • Number of pages. The most visible factor, and also the most misleading: one page for €599 is more expensive per page than five for €895.
  • custom development or template. Customizing a theme takes hours; creating a design takes days. Both are called "custom".
  • Who writes the lyrics. Often the biggest hidden item: and the reason projects slow down.
  • Functionality. Booking system, webshop, links or a customer login can easily double the price.
  • Multilingualism. A second language is not twice the work, but it is certainly not free either.
  • SEO depth. There is a world of difference from "titles completed" to structured data and a content plan.
  • What happens after delivery. Hosting, maintenance and adjustments will determine your costs in three years more than the construction price.
  • Always ask: is this a fixed price or an estimate?
  • Always ask: who supplies the texts and photos?
  • Always ask: what does it cost per month after delivery?
  • Always ask: In whose name will the domain be registered?
  • Always ask: Do I get the source code and can someone else continue with it?
  • Always ask: what does an extra page or adjustment cost later?

THE HIDDEN COSTS

What a website costs annually

The construction price is one-off, the rest is not. Calculate the costs over three years for each quote: that is the only fair comparison.

ANNUAL COSTS AFTER DELIVERY
Mail Indication per year Mandatory?
Domain name€10: €20yes
Hosting€25: €600yes
SSL certificate€0: €100yes (often included)
Business email€25: €200practically yes
Maintenance and updates€0: €900recommended
Minor adjustments€0: €600in practice yes
Realistic total SME€230: €900
Note the subscription trap. A site for €49 per month without start-up costs seems cheap, but will cost you €1,764 over three years: more than a purchased custom site for €895 plus hosting. And after those three years you still own nothing. See ownership and lock-in.

WHAT DO YOU NEED

Three rules of thumb

You don't have to be an expert to make a wise choice. These three rules prevent most expensive mistakes.

  • Does your website pay for itself with one assignment? If you sell services worth thousands of euros, then €895 compared to €0 is a negligible difference - it is recouped with one extra customer.
  • Is the website your shop window or your workshop? Just wanting to be found is different from processing orders or appointments. The second justifies custom development, the first often does not.
  • What costs your time? Building it yourself is not free; it costs you evenings that you could also have spent with customers. Include your own hours.
  • Are you just starting out and need one page? A do-it-yourself platform is fine. We just say that.
  • Do you need a five-page showcase? Then you're in Website Start (€895) good.
  • Do you want blog, links or two languages? Then it is Website Growth (€1,795) the logical step.
  • Does your site need to take over work? Then you talk about it custom development or a AI agent.
  • Are you in doubt? Request three quotes and compare them on the six questions above.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

About website costs

Why does one ask €599 and the other €5,000?

Because they are different products. For €599 you usually get one page on an existing template; for €5,000 a designed site with research, texts and functionality. Therefore, never compare the price without comparing the scope.

Is more expensive also better?

Not automatically. Above a certain amount you mainly pay for overhead: account managers, project managers, offices. For SMEs, the turning point often lies with a small agency or a good freelancer.

Isn't it better to do it myself?

If you have time and the site is mainly a business card: great idea. If your website becomes a sales channel, the costs of "doing it yourself" increase in missed requests and evenings that you could have spent on something else.
