DNS, domain name system, translates a domain name to the technical address of the server where your site is located. Without DNS you would have to type in a series of numbers. Changes are not immediately visible everywhere because the answer is temporarily remembered: this is called the TTL.

Why changes take time
To keep the Internet workable, computers remember a DNS response for a while. If you change something, they will continue to use the old address until that time expires.
That is why a site may have already been moved for you and not yet for a colleague. That is not a fault but the system working as intended.

What to pay attention to when moving
Lower the TTL a day in advance to make the changeover faster. Lowering it afterwards no longer helps.
And pay attention to your email: it runs via separate DNS records. Anyone who just moves the website and forgets the email records will lose their email.

- Don't forget your mail records — the most expensive mistake when moving.
- Expect spread — not everyone sees it at the same time.
- Don't change anything on Friday — wait for support one day.
- Make a note of your old settings — in case you have to go back.
